Tanga. The Office of the Treasury Registrar (OTR) has commended the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), particularly the Port of Tanga, for its outstanding performance in generating significant revenue, which is the result of the recent port improvement project.
These commendations were made by the Treasury Registrar, Mr Nehemiah Mchechu, on Monday, September 1, 2025, during his visit to the port to inspect its operations.
Speaking after receiving a report on the port’s operations, Mr Mchechu stated that the investment made by the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of H.E. President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, which cost approximately Sh429.1 billion, has enabled large ships to dock at the port and has significantly increased cargo throughput and revenue.
“We will ensure that both the private and public sectors work together to make major investments for the benefit of the public,” he said.
Additionally, Mr Mchechu urged the staff of Tanga Port and TPA in general to continue working diligently and to view the port as a vital government asset in the national economy.
“I also encourage the port staff to take pride in working here because we are in a place that serves as the eye and focal point of the Government in terms of economic contribution,” he underscored.
Adding, “Therefore, we must treat it as a key area that requires quality and efficient services for the sake of development.”
The Treasury Registrar also emphasized that hard work will lead to increased revenue, and as revenue grows, the dividends from public institutions will also increase — with the target set at Sh2 trillion for the 2025/ 26 financial year.
For the 2024/25 financial year, a total of Sh1.028 trillion in dividends was remitted, reflecting strong performance and signaling positive prospects toward achieving the overall goal.
Earlier, while welcoming the guest of honor, the Director General of the Tanzania Ports Authority, Mr Plasduce Mbossa, said that the investment in the Port of Tanga has helped in serving vessels at the quay at a lower cost.
For his part, the Tanga Port Manager, Mr Masoud Mrisha, assured the Treasury Registrar that services at the Port of Tanga will continue to improve.
